Panathinaikos skips refereeing meeting: Big 5 becomes Big 4 in the first group

At the headquarters of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the first of three scheduled groups of Greek Basket League clubs met with all 14 teams invited. But the seat reserved for Panathinaikos was empty. The club had confirmed its absence in advance. No one needed to ask too many questions because the message was clear. Panathinaikos has long disagreed with EOK on many refereeing matters. The Athens club has repeatedly asked for professional referees to be run through ESAKE. When the federation invited every GBL club to discuss refereeing, the absence of a major club did not look like a logistical issue. It was a deliberate choice. For outsiders, the story is simple: one team missed a meeting. For Greek basketball, the bigger point is that the Big 5 became the Big 4 in the first group. Without Panathinaikos, the table still had enough people, but the gap between the governing body and the league's most influential club has grown far wider than before. I have followed European basketball for many years and have seen clubs walk away from talks in protest. Some succeeded, others only isolated themselves. Panathinaikos chose to stay outside because they believe that sitting at the table will not change decisions already made. They refuse to legitimize a process they consider unprofessional. Yet boycotts always have a cost. While the Big 4 sit down and make recommendations, Panathinaikos has no voice in the minutes. If EOK uses these meetings to build a refereeing roadmap, the club may lose the ability to influence from within. If they object later, the obvious question will be: why did they not come when invited? Professional refereeing is the direction many top basketball leagues have taken. The question is not whether Panathinaikos wants it. The question is whether EOK can keep a major club involved in the process, or whether it will finish the work with the remaining teams and call that a success. A refereeing agreement without Panathinaikos is like a map missing its biggest city: the roads are still visible, but the turns ahead become harder to read. The real issue is not whether the meeting happened. The real issue is whether the strongest club's voice still counts after removing itself from the room. The federation may still count enough teams, but a decision without Panathinaikos will only exist on paper if the club refuses to accept it. The first meeting ended with the Big 4, but the crack left by Panathinaikos did not end with that session. What Greek basketball needs right now is not simply a meeting with all 14 seats filled. It needs a structure that makes the strongest clubs unwilling to stand outside. Without that, every meeting will just be a way to wait for the next crack to appear. Panathinaikos has sent its message: they do not want to accept a result that was decided in advance. The real answer belongs to EOK.
