A writing request was placed on the table together with an analysis document that contained no data. The document is called “Data Availability Assessment,” but inside there is no article title, no source, no article type, no information point, no entity, no time sensitivity. I read it again and again, as if I were holding a cue in front of a billiards table without an object ball. A person may grip the cue, aim, and breathe, but he cannot produce an honest shot without any target.
In sports writing, I have learned that a credible news story must begin with four small answers: what sport, who plays, which tournament, and when it took place. The analysis I received could not answer any of them. It only repeated one word: unidentifiable. The discipline was unidentifiable because the word billiards could mean snooker, nine-ball, carom, or Chinese eight-ball. The player was unidentifiable because no name appeared. The tournament was unidentifiable because there was no date, venue, format, or prize money. The technical data was unidentifiable because there was no shot to measure and no trajectory to draw.
An old player in Nha Trang once told me that the worst player is not the one who misses often, but the one who takes a wild shot when he cannot see the line clearly. A wild shot may produce a beautiful moment, but it is not skill; it is luck. The same applies to a sports writer. An article without data that invents details creates the illusion of a match that never existed. The illusion may be beautiful, but it cannot be verified.
This empty analysis reminds me of another lesson: process matters more than output. Before creating any content, a writer must identify the specific discipline. Billiards is not one single sport. Snooker has different rules from nine-ball; carom has a different scoring system from Chinese eight-ball. If a writer does not know which discipline he is discussing, he is only discussing a vague word. A vague word cannot lead to a deep analytical article.
A real Vietnamese sports story must contain a tournament name, a date, a character, and at least one figure that readers can verify. Vietnamese readers today no longer accept an article filled only with emotion but lacking data. They want to know where the numbers come from because they are used to looking up information before they believe it.
The source document does not meet any of those minimum standards. It has no original title, no author, no publication date, and no link to a specific Vietnamese billiards event. Therefore, any attempt to continue writing would be an interpretation of a void, not a report about a match or a player. A void cannot be replaced with poetic language; it must be acknowledged.
I choose to stop. That is not a rejection of creativity; it is a professional decision. In billiards, sometimes the most beautiful shot is the one not taken. When the line is not clear, a smart player chooses safety and pulls the cue back. A writer should do the same. When data is insufficient, the most responsible way to write is to stop and ask for a new source.
I still believe the Vietnamese billiards scene has many true stories waiting to be told. In small clubs along the roadside, young players practice every day. There are regional tournaments that the media has not noticed. There are statistics about safety shots, break shots, and win percentages that could become valuable material. But all those stories must begin from a real event, a real name, and a verifiable source.
Looking back on my career, I realize that the articles I am most proud of are not necessarily the ones with the most readers, but the ones in which I could prove every detail with data. An article about the silence of a player after a defeat still needs the match report. An article about shot paths as a sacred language still needs the trajectory diagram. Emotion and data are not opposites; they support each other.
This article is not a news report. It is a reminder that before writing, there must be data. Before analysis, there must be an event. Before telling a story, there must be characters. Without them, a writer should spend time looking for more information rather than rushing to produce an empty product. A responsible sports journalist cannot be satisfied with an article built from nothing.
I leave readers with a simple question, not to create curiosity but to reflect together: Do we have enough courage not to publish when we do not yet have the truth in our hands? For me, that is part of professional ethics. For Vietnamese billiards, that is the only way to develop sustainably in an age of misinformation.
